Cu Chi Tunnels

I. History of Cu Chi Tunnels

Located about 60 kilometers to the northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, it is an extensive labyrinth of underground tunnels that stretch all the way to the Cambodian border. The Cu Chi Tunnels network was built within 25 years from 1948 during the war against the French. It served as a means of communication between villages and helped the Vietnamese to evade scouting French soldiers.

The tunnel network was extended over an area of 250 kilometers during the Vietnam War. Therefore, it became one of the important parts of Viet Cong fighting troops’ strategy and also the home for thousands of soldiers.

Currently, about 120 km of the tunnels are preserved and work as a captivating attraction in Ho Chi Minh City.

II. Highlights of Cu Chi Tunnels

Alongside the War Remnants Museum, the Cu Chi Tunnels stand as one of the most powerful reminders of Vietnam’s wartime resilience. Visiting here, you can explore its unique structure and understand its key role in Vietnam’s history.

This vast underground network included hospitals, schools, theatres, and kitchens. Entrances were hidden under wooden doors and camouflage leaves, designed to fit only Vietnamese soldiers.

Despite US efforts, the tunnels remained intact. They had multiple escape routes to the Saigon River, counterfeit bunkers, and booby traps. Special doors blocked enemies and toxic gas, while hidden ventilation vents ensured secrecy. Deadly traps protected those inside.

The tunnels have three levels: the first at 3 meters deep, the second at 6 meters, and the lowest at over 12 meters. For safety, visitors can explore only the first level and some widened sections.

Many believe that if the tunnels had fallen, Vietnam would have lost the war. Their resilience played a crucial role in victory.

At Cu Chi, you can experience tunnel life firsthand. Try wartime foods like sesame and boiled cassava, or crawl through dark, narrow passages to understand the soldiers’ struggles and resilience.
